Johnson won three passing matches to reach the main draw, in the Australian Open 2013.
He lost a tight first-round match to fellow American Bobby Reynolds 6–1, 6–7(4), 3–6, 7–6(4), 4–6. In the Citi Open 2013, he lost in the 1st round to Radek Štěpánek in straight sets.
