Zverev nearly upset 11th seed Tommy Robredo in the first round at the Australian Open 2008.
He reached the quarterfinals of the Italian Open in 2009, losing to world No. 2 Roger Federer in May 2009.
Zverev lost to Łukasz Kubot from Poland in straight sets, at the Australian Open 2010. He reached the quarter-finals in the US Open 2010, where he was defeated by eventual champion Fabio Fognini.
Zverev lost another four matches in a row before his victory over Dudi Sela in the 1st round at the Serbia Open 2011.
