History of Auto Polo

It was founded in 1928 by F.R. The game is governed by the Auto Polo Association (APA) and is played on a field consisting of an r rectangular dirt or grass plaza. It is the only sport in the Olympic Games where men and women compete against each other. The game is divided into two parts: the game of rugby and the game of rugby league.

Rules of Automobile Polo

The game starts with a ball being thrown into the ground and the players running around the field. The ball is retrieved by the players and thrown again for the next pass. If the ball hits any part of the body, it is foul, and the player must return to the mark. There are also sports like Artistic Pool, Arena Polo

Auto Polo is a unique motorsport that was popular in the early 20th century. Here is a short and unique summary of the rules of Auto Polo:

  1. Teams: Auto Polo is played between two teams, each consisting of two players. Each team is designated by a specific color or number.
  2. Equipment: The players ride in specially modified automobiles, usually open-topped, with a metal cage or protective framework installed for safety. They use long-handled mallets with wooden heads to strike the ball.
  3. Field: The game is played on a large field, similar in size to a soccer field. The boundaries are marked, and there are goalposts at each end.
  4. The Ball: The ball used in Auto Polo is typically a regulation-size soccer ball, but sometimes a larger ball made of leather is used. The ball is struck using the mallets to score goals.
  5. Objective: The objective of Auto Polo is to score goals by striking the ball into the opposing team’s goalpost using the mallet. The team with the most goals at the end of the designated playing time wins.
  6. Gameplay: The game begins with a coin toss to determine which team starts with the ball. The players maneuver their automobiles on the field, trying to strike the ball toward the opposing team’s goalpost while also defending their own goal.
  7. Safety: Safety is of utmost importance in Auto Polo. Players are required to wear protective gear, including helmets and seat belts. The automobiles used in the game are reinforced with safety features to minimize the risk of injury.
  8. Time Limit: Auto Polo matches typically have a designated time limit, usually around one hour. The team with the most goals at the end of the time limit is declared the winner.
  9. Modern Status: Auto Polo is now considered a historical sport and is not widely played today. It has been replaced by other motorsports and traditional polo.

Please note that these rules are a general overview and may vary depending on specific variations of the game and local regulations.

Equipment of the Automobile polo

Men’s Equipment used is similar to that of modern-day rugby. The players wear protective shoes, shin pads, elbow pads, headgear, and protective helmets. The rules of the game are similar to those of rugby.

Auto Polo was a unique and thrilling sport that emerged in the early 20th century. Here is a list of the equipment commonly used in Automobile Polo:

1. Automobiles

Specially modified automobiles were the primary equipment used in Auto Polo. These vehicles were typically open-topped and equipped with reinforced frames or cages for player safety. The automobiles were designed for maneuverability and had powerful engines to navigate the field and strike the ball.

2. Mallets

Players used long-handled mallets with wooden heads to strike the ball during the game. The mallets were similar in design to those used in traditional polo, but they were adapted for use from inside the automobiles.

3. Balls

Auto Polo used a regulation-sized soccer ball or, at times, a larger ball made of leather. The ball was durable enough to withstand the high-speed impacts and strikes from the mallets. It was the central object of the game, and players aimed to strike it toward the opposing team’s goalpost to score points.

4. Safety Gear

Given the nature of the sport and the potential risks involved, players wore various safety gear. This included helmets to protect their heads from collisions or falls, and seat belts to keep them secure inside the moving vehicles. Safety precautions were crucial to minimize the risk of injury during the intense gameplay.

5. Protective Clothing

Players often wore protective clothing, such as padded jackets or vests, to offer additional protection during the high-impact gameplay. The clothing provided some cushioning against collisions and falls, reducing the risk of injuries.

It’s worth noting that Auto Polo is considered a historical sport and is no longer commonly played today. However, its equipment and the daring spirit it embodied remain a captivating part of sports history.

In conclusion

A present variant of Auto polo played with Motorcycles, called Moto Polo. It was created in 2008 in Rwanda by James Dargan and Sam.
