September 29, 2024 By Live Sports

On the Island of Man, Cammag is a team sport. It’s similar to the Irish game of hurling and is closely related to the Scottish game of shinty.

Despite the introduction of association football in the twentieth century, it is still the most popular sport in Man today, having ceased to be played in about 1900. It’s a sport that starts with a C character.

History of Cammag

Cammag was only played by men (of all ages) throughout the winter and began on Hunt the Wren Day (December 26). The main playing ground in Peel was Corris’ Close (now Athol Street).

Kit Gawne claims in his book ‘Isle of Man Hockey that missionaries may have brought the game of camming to the Island.

Three men and a kid were brought before the church court for playing camming on a Sunday in 1760, according to the earliest documented account of the game.

The island’s north and south sides compete in matches. The Northern line is used to connect the Grand Island Hotel and Niarbyl, south of Peel, according to research by David Fisher in Manx National Heritage archives. The game is usually played in three 20-minute periods, with the first starting at 2 p.m.

A large number of players are packed in a small space, and the ball cannot move far distances, which is how the game typically revolves around a core pack.

Some Short History of Cammag

A short history of the Cammag or Shinty Stick has given below.

  1. Cammag is a traditional sport that originated on the Isle of Man, an island located in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland. The sport is similar to hockey and is played with a stick, a ball, and a goal. The word “Cammag” is derived from the Manx Gaelic word “cam” which means bent or crooked.
  2. The history of Cammag can be traced back to the 16th century when it was played by the Manx people as a way to celebrate the end of winter and the start of spring. The sport was particularly popular among the rural communities on the island and was played on special occasions such as Easter Monday.
  3. During the 19th century, the popularity of Cammag began to decline due to the emergence of other sports such as football and cricket. However, the sport was kept alive by a small group of enthusiasts who continued to play it regularly.
  4. In the early 20th century, efforts were made to revive the sport and bring it to a wider audience. In 1904, the first Cammag Association was formed, and the rules of the game were standardized. Tournaments and matches were organized, and the sport began to gain popularity once again.
  5. Today, Cammag is still played on the Isle of Man, mainly as a recreational sport. The rules have remained largely unchanged over the years, and the game is still played on rough and uneven terrain. The sport has also gained recognition as an important part of the island’s cultural heritage and is celebrated during various festivals and events.

Rules of Cammag

The rules of the game were simple and varied depending on the location of the match. Generally, the game was played with two teams, each consisting of up to 50 players.

The objective was to score a goal by hitting the ball into the opposing team’s goalpost. There were no set boundaries, and the game was played on rough and uneven terrain.

Cammag is a traditional sport played on the Isle of Man, and the rules may vary depending on the location and local customs. Here are the basic rules of Cammag:

  1. The game is played with a stick called a cabman and a ball.
  2. Two teams, each consisting of up to 50 players, play against each other.
  3. The objective of the game is to hit the ball into the opposing team’s goalpost to score a goal.
  4. There are no set boundaries, and the game is played on rough and uneven terrain.
  5. Players can catch, carry, or kick the ball to move it around the field.
  6. Players can also use their common to hit the ball, and they can hit other players’ cabman to prevent them from hitting the ball.
  7. There are no restrictions on how players can tackle or stop other players.
  8. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins.

Cammag is a physically demanding and occasionally dangerous sport, with injuries being common. To prevent severe injuries, players are advised to wear protective gear like helmets and shin guards.

There are also related many sports that start with C like Camel Racing, Camel Jumping, Cycling, Car Ice Racing, Chess Boxing, Carom Billiards, and Cricket.

Cammag isle of man Association

The Isle of Man Cammag Association was established in January 2014 to oversee the sport and regulate it on behalf of the island. The inaugural match was scheduled to take place on July 5, 2015, in a league of seven clubs.

The intended, however, is a different matter. the association did not materialize, and no league was ever set up. Cammag remains without a governing body, and without a formal set of rules.

How hard is a shinty ball?

A shinty ball, also known as a “shinty,” is typically made of cork or a cork-like material with a leather covering. The size and weight of a shinty ball can vary, but it is generally about the same size as a hockey ball and weighs between 2.5 and 3.5 ounces.

The hardness of a shanty ball depends on its construction and how well it is maintained. A well-maintained ball will be firm and bouncy, making it easier to control and pass accurately.

A ball that has been used extensively or has been exposed to wet conditions may become softer and less predictable.

The hardness of the shinty ball, combined with the speed and force of the players, means that collisions between players and the ball can be potentially dangerous. As a result, safety is a key concern in shinty, and players are expected to play the game in a fair and controlled manner.

Last Word

Cammag is a centuries-old sport that is still enjoyed by many people today. It can be a hard, fast-paced game with the potential for serious injury, but with proper safety precautions in place, it can be enjoyed safely and responsibly.
