Boccia sport is similar to bocce game. It also involves petanque bowls and precision balls. The name boccia comes from the Latin word “boss” ”bottia”. This competition participated in the physical disabilities athletes. The competition is arranged internationally, locally, and nationally.

Firstly, it was designed for cerebral palsy people but now also includes affecting motor skills. It is well-known as a Paralympic game since 1984. From 1984 to 2020, it is joined more than 75 organizations.

The authority of (BISFed) governed the boccia sport and it not counterpart in the Olympic games.

History

The Boccia is played by a competitive or recreational system. It is arranged internationally, nationally, regionally, and locally. The sports world has approx 350 boccia players.

The 2007 Boccia World Cup participated in 24 nations and 179 players. This tournament was held in Canada Vancouver, BC. Then in 2018, this competition was held in Beijing and was participated in 19 nations with 88 athletes.

Competition

The country of Korea and Brazil won equal honor two times (2 gold and one bronze medal). In 2010, competition 36 nations participated and 28 nations have participated in a team competition.

Rules

One team has 3 players; every athlete must be of mixed gender. The game began with the coin toss. The ball firstly is thrown by the first player than the other athlete. The athlete moved the ball by feet or hands during the playing period. The referee counts the point to measure the ball distance.

The team or the athlete who wins the most point is selected as the winner. Also has the reserve athlete for one team. The pitch measure is 41 ft × 20 ft (12.5 m × 6 m). Besides 6.6 ft (2 m) place has empty.

Boccia is a precision ball sport designed for athletes with disabilities, specifically those with limited mobility.

  1. Equipment: Boccia is played with colored leather balls, typically red and blue, as well as a white target ball called the jack or target ball. The balls are thrown or rolled towards the target ball.
  2. Players and Teams: Boccia can be played individually, in pairs (doubles), or in teams of three (triples). Each player or team aims to score points by placing their balls as close as possible to the jack.
  3. Court and Setup: The game is played on a flat, smooth surface called the court. The court is divided into six rectangular throwing boxes. Each player or team occupies one end of the court during their turn.
  4. Throwing Sequence: The game starts with a coin toss or other method to determine which player or team goes first. The first player/team throws the jack to a designated location on the court. Then, they throw their colored balls, trying to get as close to the jack as possible.
  5. Throwing Techniques: Players can throw the ball with their hands, feet, or assisted devices, depending on their level of disability. They can choose to roll, lob, or propel the ball in any way that suits their ability and strategy.
  6. Scoring: After all the balls have been thrown, the closest ball to the jack is awarded points. The player/team with the closest ball receives one point. Additional points are awarded for each of their balls that are closer to the jack than their opponent’s closest ball.
  7. Rounds and Game Duration: Boccia is typically played in a series of rounds or ends. The number of rounds can vary depending on the competition or agreement between players/teams. The game continues until a predetermined score or number of rounds is reached.
  8. Fouls and Penalties: Various fouls and penalties may apply, such as stepping out of the throwing box, touching or moving balls before the round is completed, or exceeding the time limit for a throw.

About the Sport
