He returned to tour at Monte Carlo Rolex Masters, where he played quarterfinals, before losing to champion Novak Djokovic. Djokovic was the 2016 French Open winner.
He finished the season as the top No.9 in the year-end ATP rankings. He lost to David Ferrer in the 4th round in straight sets at the French Open 2015.
