Karlsson started a seven-year, $45.5 million deal with the Senators on 19 June 2012. On 8 December 2012, he accepted a one-game suspension for allegedly throwing his stick at a referee a match.
After Karlsson promptly recorded a goal and two assists as Ottawa failed the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 in their opener. Karlsson’s Achilles tendon lacerated when Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke had his skate on 13 February 2013.
On 25 April 2013, he returned to the Ottawa lineup against the Washington Captain. The Senators organization proclaimed Karlsson would serve as the ninth captain in the team’s modern history on 2 October 2014.
During the 2015-16 seasons, Karlsson appeared in all 82 games for the third-straight season. He set a team record when he appeared in his 312th consecutive game on 4 March 2017 during the 2016-17 seasons.

International career
The first time, Karlsson was selected as the tournament’s defenceman at the IIHF world U-18. In the World Championship 2012, he tied for fourth in team scoring with Senators teammate Daniel Alfredsson.
Karlsson’s scored a powerplay goal in the semi-final against Finland to earn Sweden on 21 February 2014. Afterward, he was announced to represent Sweden at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 on 1 March 2016.
His childhood idols included Nicklas Lidstrom, Mats Sundin, Peter Forsberg and Daniel Alfredsson.
