Agarwal was added to India’s national side for their series against Australia team later Prithvi Shaw was ruled out of the side. After, he was named to India’s squad for the Cricket World Cup 2019 in July 2019, replacing Vijay Shankar due to Shankar’s injury.
In the first test cricket against South Africa team in October 2019 he scored his maiden century. After, playing his second test hundred against South Africa team, he became only the second Indian opener after, Virender Sehwag to score back to back centuries.
