Towes chose out of his final two years of college hockey eligibility to start with the Blackhawks on 16 May 2007, after starting a three-year entry-level contract.
He became the third-youngest team captain in NHL league history at the age of 20 years. And he scored his first career hat trick in the NHL career on 27 February 2009.
On 21 June 2010, he was selected to be the cover player for the EA Sports video game NHL. After, he recorded a career-high 76 points in 80 games during the 2010-11 seasons.
