He won the Mark H. McCormack Medal as the top-ranked amateur at the end of the season 2011. This award made him an invitation to the Open Championship 2012.
Cantlay lost to Ethan Tracy in the Western Amateur final at the North Shore Country Club in Illinois, on 6 August 2011. He represented the United States at the Walker Cup 2011, where he posted a 2–1–1.
