Ma was given the chance to participate despite his up-and-down start to 2017 at the world championships held in Düsseldorf from late May to early June.
In June 2017, Ma won the Japan Open in Tokyo, beating Xu in 6 sports and Fan in 5 for the trophy. Ma’s world ranking was released to 9th of being inactive, at the opening of 2018.
