Towes chose out of his final two years of college hockey eligibility to start with the Blackhawks on 16 May 2007, after starting a three-year entry-level contract.
He became the third-youngest team captain in NHL league history at the age of 20 years. And he scored his first career hat-trick in the NHL career on 27 February 2009.
On 21 June 2010, he was selected to be the cover player for EA Sports’ video game NHL. After, his recorded a career-high 76 points in 80 games during the 2010-11 seasons.
