This format increases competition and unpredictability.

I have all the confirmed groups. Here’s the full updated section:

Group Stage Fixtures & Format

New 48-Team Group Format

The 2026 FIFA World Cup introduces a completely revamped group stage structure, marking the biggest format change in the tournament’s history. For the first time, 48 national teams will compete across 12 groups rather than the traditional 8, with each group containing exactly four teams.

Every team plays three matches during the group stage, facing each of the other three sides in their group once. The top two finishers from every group automatically advance to the knockout rounds. Beyond that, the eight best third-placed teams from across all 12 groups also progress, meaning a total of 32 teams move forward — setting up the brand-new Round of 32 that has never existed at any previous World Cup.

Points are awarded in the standard way: three points for a win, one point for a draw, and none for a defeat. When teams finish level on points, the tiebreakers follow the familiar FIFA order — goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head result, and so on. The eight advancing third-place teams are selected by comparing all 12 third-placed finishers against each other, so a team can finish third and still reach the knockout stage if its record is strong enough relative to the other third-place sides across the tournament.

The 12 groups are labeled A through L. All group stage matches run from June 11 through June 27, 2026, with the final matchday of each group played simultaneously to ensure fairness.

The 12 Groups

Group A —

Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, and Czechia

Mexico hosts this group and opens the entire tournament against South Africa at Estadio Azteca on June 11. South Korea and Czechia complete a group that spans three continents and promises a competitive battle for the top two spots.

Group B —

Canada, Switzerland, Qatar, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Canada plays all three matches on home soil in Toronto and Vancouver. Switzerland brings European quality, Bosnia & Herzegovina qualified through the UEFA playoffs after eliminating Italy, and Qatar is the defending Asian champions, making their second consecutive World Cup appearance.

Group C —

Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Scotland

One of the most eye-catching groups of the tournament. Five-time champions Brazil face Morocco, the side that stunned the world by reaching the 2022 semifinals. Scotland make their first World Cup appearance in 28 years, while Haiti mark a historic return to the tournament after a 52-year absence.

Group D —

USA, Paraguay, Australia, Türkiye

The United States hosts this group and open their campaign on June 12 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Paraguay and Australia are familiar World Cup names, while Türkiye qualified through the UEFA playoffs with a narrow win over Kosovo to complete a tough, evenly-matched group.

Group E —

Germany, Curaçao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador

Germany are the clear favorites in a group that also carries a historic footnote — Curaçao become the smallest nation by population ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup. Ivory Coast and Ecuador add African and South American strength to what should be a fascinating group dynamic.

Group F —

Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia

A well-balanced group featuring four experienced World Cup nations. The Netherlands come in as strong favorites, while Japan is one of Asia’s most consistent performers. Sweden qualified through the UEFA playoffs by defeating Poland, and Tunisia represents North Africa’s hopes in this section.

Group G —

Belgium, Egypt, New Zealand, Iran

Belgium is the headline act and one of the tournament’s stronger sides. Egypt brings African flair, Iran is Asia’s most-qualified nation in World Cup history, and New Zealand makes the most of its place in what could be one of the more open groups of the group stage.

Group H —

Spain, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay

The highest-ranked team in the tournament, Spain, headlines Group H. Cape Verde make their historic World Cup debut, becoming one of four first-time qualifiers at this tournament. Saudi Arabia and Uruguay are seasoned campaigners who will push hard for the second automatic qualification spot.

Group I —

France, Senegal, Norway, Iraq

France, the world’s third-ranked side, leads this group and is among the pre-tournament favorites for the title. Senegal is Africa’s strongest outfit and won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Norway arrives powered by Erling Haaland, one of the most dangerous strikers in world football. Iraq completes the group, making their first World Cup appearance since 1986 — a remarkable 40-year return.

Group J —

Argentina, Algeria, Austria, Jordan

Defending champions Argentina are placed in Group J and open against Algeria in Kansas City. Austria is an improving European side, Algeria brings North African ambition, and Jordan makes their World Cup debut — one of four nations appearing in the finals for the very first time in 2026. Argentina was the FIFA World Cup 2022 champion.

Group K —

Portugal, DR Congo, Uzbekistan, Colombia

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal headlines a group with genuine variety. Colombia is South America’s dark horse, DR Congo qualified through the inter-confederation playoffs after beating Jamaica, and Uzbekistan make their debut on the world’s biggest football stage.

Group L —

England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama

England are placed in Group L alongside Croatia in what is an immediate rematch of their dramatic 2018 World Cup semifinal. Ghana brings West African energy, and Panama — the host nation’s CONCACAF neighbors — complete a group that UK fans will be following especially closely from the very first whistle.

Match Distribution

  • Total group matches: significantly increased
  • Multiple matches played daily
  • Flexible scheduling across different venues

Fans can expect continuous football action during this phase.
