The Grand Slam board provisionally suspended Fognini for two majors and fined him $96,000 US dollars on 11 October 2017. He reached the final by defeating top seed Roberto in the semifinal at the Petersburg.
After, he won the first set against Rafael Nadal 7-time champion before downing in three sets in Rome. He reached the third round match won by Kei Nishikori with the system in the Australian Open 2011.
