Boccia, History, Competition, Rules, and Equipment

Boccia sport is similar to bocce game. It also involves petanque bowls and precision balls. The name boccia has come from the Latin word “boss” ”bottia”. This competition participated in the physical disabilities athletes. The competition is arranged internationally, locally, and nationally.

Firstly, it was designed for cerebral palsy people but now also included affecting motor skills. It is well-known as a Paralympic game since 1984. From 1984 to 2020, it is joined more than 75 organizations.

The authority of (BISFed) governed the boccia sport and it not counterpart in the Olympic game.

History

The Boccia is played by a competitive or recreational system. It is arranged internationally, nationally, regionally, and locally. The sports world has approx 350 boccia players.

The 2007 Boccia World Cup participated in 24 nations and 179 players. This tournament was held in Canada Vancouver, BC. Then in 2018, this competition was held in Beijing and was participated in 19 nations with 88 athletes.

Competition

The country of Korea and Brazil won equal honor two times (2 gold and one bronze medal). In 2010, competition 36 nations participated and 28 nations have participated in a team competition.

Rules

One team has 3 players; every athlete must be of mixed gender. The game began with the coin toss. The ball firstly is thrown by the first player than the other athlete. The athlete moved the ball by feet or hands during the playing period. The referee counts the point to measure the ball distance.

The team or the athlete who wins the most point is selected as the winner. Also has the reserve athlete for one team. The pitch measure is 41 ft × 20 ft (12.5 m × 6 m). Besides 6.6 ft (2 m) place has empty.

About the Sport

Its ball is made of leather and the color is red or blue. Also, the ball is called a leather ball or jack ball. For per player have the 4 or 6 balls in one per end. The pitch is also smooth; the ball is converted by wooden which is called basketball. Sometimes it played on the hard turf floor.

Equipment

The pitch shape is a (V) pattern. The balls are made of leather the weight is (9.7 ounces) 275 grams and the ball measure is around 270 mm (11 inches), also circumference (about 86mm diameter). To be eligible for this competition the player must be a disability or traumatic brain (cerebral palsy), have a wheelchair.
