Hockey Betting Guide and Strategies

Hockey Betting Guide and Strategies

March 11, 2020 By Live Sports

Betting on hockey is becoming more popular each day and it is actually really simple. All you need to bet on hockey is some basic knowledge. First of all, you will need to understand hockey betting odds and types of bets, both of which will be covered in this article.

If you want to know how to bet on hockey in 2020, stay tuned to this article and find out everything you need to know before placing any bets.

Hockey Betting Odds

Truth to be told, hockey is not so popular as football and basketball. Therefore, bookmakers can make some tiny mistakes from time to time. For example, 2 bookmakers may have different favourite teams and give better odds on underdogs. That is why it is good to have open accounts at more than 1 book shop. You should seize the opportunity and take advantage of every mistake bookmakers make. If you want to understand hockey betting odds and how to calculate it, you should read this article: about Hockey game bettings.

Types of Hockey Bets

Moneyline Betting

The simplest way to bet on hockey is Moneyline betting. You just choose 1 team to win the game outright. If your team wins that game, your bet is won, simple as that. The odds can vary from team to team and it is usually not profitable to bet on favorite teams. That’s why there are other betting options you should try. You can get here also the details about the Rules of Ice Hockey.

Puck Line

One of those alternatives is puck line betting. This option is usually used in case of heavy favourite playing against an underdog. How does it work? Puck line is also called handicap betting because it gives a slight advantage to the underdog team and a handicap to favourite. For example, you bet on a favourite team to win with -1,5 goals handicap.

That means they have to win that game by 2 or more goals. You can also bet on the underdog to either win the game or lose by less than 2 goals. The odds on handicap betting can be really high, the higher the handicap, the higher the odds. High hockey odds bring high risk, so be careful with that.

Totals (Under/Over)

Betting on totals basically means betting on over or under. For example, if you want to bet on the number of goals, there is a margin set by the bookmaker and you need to predict will the number of total goals be above or under this margin.

You can bet on the number of goals scored by one team, number of total goals, number of goals at a certain period and so on. The odds usually depend on the margin. For instance, if you want to bet above, the higher the margin, the higher the odds and vice versa.

Grand Salami

Grand salami is a very popular bet among the hockey community. It is similar to betting on totals but you don’t bet on just one game. Just the opposite, you bet on all the games played on that day.

How does it work? The bookmaker creates a margin each day based on the number of games played that game. It is usually a number of games in one league but it can contain multiple leagues too. You bet on a total number of goals scored on every match. There are some special rules. Overtimes are excluded and if any of the games is suspended that day, odds are set to 1,00.

Hockey Betting Strategies & Tips

There is a ton of hockey betting strategies you can find online. Some of them work, some of them don’t. Anyway, there is no strategy that can guarantee you to profit. This strategy won’t guarantee you to profit either but it can guarantee you that you won’t lose too much money.

Units Strategy

You need to establish a bankroll and never go above it. This can be done by limiting your deposits to once per month. Pick a monthly amount you can spend on gambling and divide it into units.

For example, if you choose your monthly balance to be $100, divide it into 100 units and never bet more than 10 units on one ticket. This way, your all-in bet is only 10% of your bankroll so you can never lose all your money on a single bet.

You can try different bets and even some risky bets but you must be smart. If you want to place a risky bet, don’t bet more than 5 units on it. After the month ends, withdraw your winnings while leaving 100 units for the next month.
