Witthoft made her first debut on WTA Tour in the Swedish Open 2012. She is trained by Torben Beltz and Philip Lang.

Carina defeated Jill Craybas, Akgul Amanmuradova, and Marina Shamayko and was selected to the main draw singles first round. But she lost to Kateryna Bondarenko in this first round.

She started Brisbane International but she lost to Aleksandra Krunic in the first round.

Witthöft was selected as a lucky loser to the main draw though she lost to Camila Giorgi in the qualifying tournament. She lost to wildcard Sam Stosur in the first round.

In the Australian Open first round by 8 seed, Carina lost to Caroline Garcia. Also, she lost to Caroline Wozniacki’s second round to the top seed in the tournament of the Qatar Open.
